In your article you mentioned the Plato's Allegory of a Cave and it made me think about the Television. It seems that our society looks at the shadows on the wall (TV) and thinks that it represents reality. Think about how many people emulate what is seen on the TV. Look at the consumerism and debt that most of us are in. Why? Because we are told what, when and how much, we need by businesses and their marketers and do not stop to look around and think what is happening.-- posted by PhiloProf

In response to Shadows on the wall posted by PhiloProf:Excellent point. We have many more shadows to look at today, don't we? In fact, the internet itself could be seen as a source of shadows. Pop-up ads tell you that you have won something. Email has replaced much of the meaningful contact we used to have. It's a very tricky line. I think a lot of parents do use television and the internet as a source of education, which might be OK if it were better monitored and supplemented by actual lessons. In fact, I'm not sure most parents even know the reality beyond the signs that society gives them through television and similar media. If Plato's society did not, despite having fewer distractions, how much harder is it for our society?

It seems to me that Plato didn't take into

as well as environmental & economic conditions.
