.
I think it's just great that you put this information out here for others to read.
.
I recall my first introduction in learning at the college level. I am so very thankful for the events of my life that, finally, led up to me enrolling in our little state college in Saginaw, Michigan. I was 36 years old.
.
When I was a young boy I had expressed a desire to go to college; but, was discouraged by a parent who told me I should speak to the deacons of our church and they would interview me to see if I could qualify to go to Bible school.
.
Anyway, our introductory course in rhetoric was Humanities 101 and there I began to learn about the Greeks. Reading your latest article reminded me of that class and of how much I enjoyed it--me, a 36 year old man with children relating with a professor a year or two younger than me and students all of whom were about 19 or 20 years old. I gained an appreciation of life for which I will always be thankful.

Yes, I think the Greeks are a perfect introduction to philosophy and just to learning in general. They remind us of those pure moments of truth-seeking. Somehow the Greeks always seem very sincere to me. They had their cynics too (they started the Cynic movement, after all!), but somehow they seem less jaded...more purely intellectual and optimistic than we are today.

I think Greek philosophy is magic; I really do.

Thanks for the story too!
