.
I remember when I first read de Toqeville.
.
He came north into Michigan and ended up in the town where I was born, Saginaw, before he turned around and went back east. Our main post office was designed after his estate in France. So, Saginaw had a natural connection with him.

Heh. The way your message reads makes it sound like he did that in your lifetime.

That's interesting though that your town has taken an interest in him just because he visited there. Did he do anything while he was there?

The town was mostly non-existent except for some Native Americans who gathered there because it was a rich and fertile river valley.
.
Regarding what he did while he was there, I think he mentions that there were quite a few musquitoes.
.
I doubt that many people know about the tie in between the post office building and de Toqeville's French Villa. The reputation of the town was more toward the lumberjacks and bawdy houses and the post office building was a federal project. Probably no one locally had much to do with it. But, Saginaw was one of those booming towns of the nineteenth century.

I've always thought that whole area would be nice to live in, even though I've never even visited. Something about the midwest, from Iowa and Ohio to Michigan, even Wisconsin...it just appeals to me.

Michigan has a wide variety of features.
.
If you come here, don't forget to visit the U.P. which is truly a tourist's delight for the natural. It's probably snowing up there right now. happy And, when it snows in the U.P., it snows. Lake Superior is a beauty to behold.
.
Michigan, as you probably know, boasts the Third Coast in America. The Traverse Bay area is really a knock out. Lake Michigan is the shining big sea water of Hiawatha.
.
de Toqueville visited the eastern side of Michigan up to the Saginaw River. In those days, a true wilderness. My ancestors came to Michigan in 1823.
