I think you are absolutely right. They are the two biggest threats to American democracy. We've been seeing a rise of a combination of nationalism and fascism (which are related ideas, actually) since Sept. 11th. There's very much of an us vs. them mentality, but 'them' here is anyone who disagrees with the President.

Democracy, at least our democracy, is built on the right of reasonable dissent. It's a necessary part of a free society. Without it, we have fascism, in principle if not in name.

The puzzle is beginning to be less confusing.

Now begins a process of pealing away some of the bamboozling we have been fed.

The reason Rumsfeld was cut loose involves a great deal of subterfuge. I'm sure cutting him loose was done in hopes that some investigations would be deterred. I hope not. NOW is when the efforts against the dark side must be redoubled. And, he does represent the dark side along with Cheney and the rest of the Neo-cons who are trying to look good right now. Will we be suckered again?

The reason my Evangelistic friend is opposed to Nancy Pelousi is that the speaker to be is an outspoken and assertive woman and she believes women should not assert themselves--especially in the affairs of men.

I think so.

Not that she would want her to stroke out; but, that she should wake up to reality and get off the Bible Bus.

But, I remember as recently as back in the late sixties and early seventies that women were reticent about feminism--even those of whom it can be said today that experience a total sense of empowerment in their righteousness. It was a matter of breaking the chains that held them in bondage to traditional beliefs about a woman's place. And, they did it.
